Week of January 2nd

Parents,
A special thank you to the PTO for providing us with a wonderful cookie exchange and a delicious lunch on Thursday. Thank you to all the parents who baked cookies and made appetizers.

This week the fifth grade "Too Good For Drugs" program will begin. Deputy Seward from the DuPage County Sheriff's Department will be coming to our class on Fridays to discuss various topics of drug prevention. A letter explaining more about the program will be sent home after our first session.

Important Dates:

January 3 -- Classes Resume
January 16 -- M.L. King Holiday -- No School
February 1-- Six Flags Read to Succeed forms due

Reading:This week we will be focusing on identifying main ideas and details and using them to summarize a text. The Golden Lion Tamarin Comes Home will be our story as we practice these important skills.

English: In English we will continue focusing on the six traits of writing. The students will be writing a narrative telling of their proudest moment. We will also begin our unit on Pronouns this week. Subject pronouns will be the first lesson.

Spelling: Unit 15 Homework is due on Thursday. Test is Friday.

Science: We will continue our physical science unit. Lesson two focuses on physical properties and changes. We will read and learn what density is and how it is related to volume. We will also compare and contrast mixtures and solutions.

Social Studies: In social studies we will spend a few days learning about latitude and longitude. The students will be completing an Around the World activity using coordinate points of latitude and longitude as destination clues.

Mrs. Bucklin's Math Class: We will begin chapter 24 this week which focuses on the area of squares, rectangles, triangles, and parallelograms. We will also continue to work on problem solving and T-charts.
