Week of October 3rd

Parents,
On Friday from 8:15 - 9:45, our class will be participating in the Farming for Fuels program brought to our school by the DuPage Children's Museum. This program is an inquiry-based learning lab that introduces the concepts connected with creating bio-fuels and the need to change to alternative energy sources for transportation. The ideas shared during the program will be explored in more detail later this year in Science.
Important Dates:
October 6--Leaves for leaf project are due
October 7-- Farming for Fuel in school field trip
October 10 -- Columbus Day -- No School

October 11-- Teacher Institute--No School


Reading: This week we will be focusing on story structure. We will read the story of Elena and map out the the character, setting, problem, and solution of the story. There will be a vocabulary quiz on Friday.

English: In English we will continue Chapter 5 "Capitalization and Punctuation." The students will learn all the different ways commas are used in writing. Later in the week we will complete a special project on how commas can change the meaning. There will be a graded English review on Thursday.

Spelling:Unit 6 Spelling homework is due Thursday. Test is on Friday.


Science: In science we will continue continue 5, Energy and Ecosystems. The students will learn how energy is passed through an ecosystem.

Social Studies: In social studies we will continue chapter 5 "The Struggle to Found Colonies." The students will read about the first successful colony of Jamestown. We will also read how the search for a Northwest Passage led to the founding of French and Dutch colonies in North America.

Mrs. Bucklin's Math Class: In math we will continue chapter three, Division. This week we will focus on 0's in division and using basic facts and patterns to find quotients. There will be a quiz on lessons 1-5 on Wednesday. We will not be meeting for math on Thursday and Friday.
